- Nixon didn't end supply reduction programs for corn and other major crops. They continued until 1995, and then were ended. Farm crops like corn "lack price responsiveness" "on both the supply and the demand side for aggregate agriculture, (price inelasticity,) meaning free markets chronically fail to balance supply and demand and give farmers fair prices. Democrats fixed this with minimum farm price floor programs set at living wage or parity levels from 1942 to 1952, (backed up by supply reductions, as needed). Corporate lobbyists convinced Congress to reduce, 1953-1995, and end them, 1996-2023. Prices followed price floors right down, until we had 8 of the 9 lowest corn (and soybean) prices in history from 1997-2005, (& similar for other major crops, and also similar for fruits and vegetables). Corn prices have been below full costs most of the time since 1981! (USDA "Commodity Costs and Returns") Cheap prices, (farmers,) massively subsidized agribusiness, and through them, consumers. In subsidizing CAFO feeds, farmers were subsidizing the loss of their value added livestock and poultry, and most farms across vast regions lost all livestock and poultry, (i.e. 1953 to the 1990s). So they lost sustainable (livestock) crops, like grass, hay and the nurse crops like oats. This left us mostly with corn and soybeans in many regions. So, paradoxically, the penalization of crops, of farmers, including corn and soybeans, led to large increases in the amount of corn and soybeans, as farms lost other major (sustainable, livestock) crops. So yes, the problems are huge and real, but they're caused by penalizing crops like corn.
