- Hi some beautiful shots and pics ! You said somewhere that you grow hybrid corn and can't save seeds. But did you never think about growing another strain which provides seeds which will adapt to your conditions along the years? I presume the hybrid produces more, but wouldn't it be financially sustainable? Or try on a small scale?
- The 7721 brings back memories. When I was growing up we had a pull type combine. It wasn't a 7721 it was a 914 International. I combined many many acres with that combine. Pull types have their downfalls but when you get used to them they are great. The reason my dad bought one was because they were way cheaper than a self propelled. We could afford to buy a brand new pull type type. We used that combine for 15 years.
- Awesome video!! So part of being organic means no pesticides correct? Just curious if you noticed a difference in the health of your dairy cows when you switched to organic?
- I'm a bit new to this but once the season is over do u have to plant more seeds or will it grow again because of the roots
- hey the 7721 combine can the head be changed from corn to a small grain table or do you have to have 2 combines one for each if the heads can be changed i bet that would be way more challangeing than a a self propeled combine
- Hey Paul... do you guys run wide rows??? if you ever get a self propelled combine we have a 4 row ride JD corn head for sale here in NW Iowa... Give me a call if you're interested. 712-363-4876
- how many cows
- Nice video!! My brother changed the family dairy farm to organic about 12 years ago too. Up in Ontario Canada. My wife wants me to do it too but I'm afraid to do it and not opposed to it. Just takes a lot of dedication to jump in head first! Where do u farm?
- Hi ironheart#3, yes we do store all our grain. Pretty much all the grain and crops that we grow on our farm get put through all of our Holstein animals. If we do have any grain to sell, it will get stored first until we can find a buyer for it. That's the difference with organic grain. It gets sold on a separate market and has to be kept separate from non-organic grains. Taking to it to the grain elevator wouldn't work since keeping the organic and non-organic grains separate would be impossible. Plus organic grains are worth more money. Sometimes it works that we can find another buyer locally.

We also do dry down our own grain if it needs to be. Thanks for the question!
- hey Paul, do you store your grain or do you sell as you harvest? do you guys also dry your grain ?
- Thanks TheAdamRides! Nice to see someone interested in organic row crop farming. We've been organic farming just over 10 years now and have learned a lot of does & don'ts about organic farming but we never stop learning. We always try to keep an open mind and aren't afraid to try new things. Switching over to organic dairy farming was the best decision we ever made.
- Wow amazing harvest! It's guys like you who give me hope for getting into organic row cropping.
- Very impressed. The corn sample in the combine hopper is very clean, better than some new and larger combines I have seen. That takes proper adjusted to the sieves and fan. Just takes a little extra time to do it right.....very good video!
- Does mechanical cultivating cause the soil to dry out faster and non cultivating?
- Hi Bill, it's kind of a long story why we ended up with a pull type. My dad use to use pull types. He use to have JD 65 & then upgraded to a JD 96 pull type. I guess we just had a fascination with pull types combines because that's what we grew up with & when saw this 7721 pull type come up for sale back in 2005 we just had to get it. Yes it does take a stout tractor to pull it. I wouldn't use any smaller tractor to pull it. The tractor had all it could handle pulling the combine up a hill with nearly a full hopper. That's why we have the one set of duals on the tractor.
- The pull-type combine does a pretty good job? Why the pull type as opposed to self propelled? Looks like it takes a pretty stout tractor to pull it.
- Can you talk about the other corn fields that weren't previously alfalfa and didn't have manure put on them? They averaged 200 bpa without any fertilizer at all? Did you lime?
Thanks!
- Thanks for the nice comment! We have around 7 tractors on on our farm. 3 of those 7 are JD 4020s.
- sweet video!! like the 7721
how many tractors do you have?
